The short version: Benday sends nothing to us.

Last updated: 25 October 2026

Benday is a reader for comics, manga and webtoons stored on a server that you run or have access to: Komga, Kavita, Stump or an OPDS catalog. Benday is developed by Palle Karlsson ("we"). This policy explains what the app does with your data.

The short version

Benday does not send any data to us. It has no accounts with us, no analytics, no advertising and no crash reporting. Your data stays on your device and on the servers you connect it to.

Data the app handles

Your server address and sign-in. The server address, your username and your password or API key are stored on your device. Passwords, API keys and tracker tokens are kept in Android's encrypted storage. They are sent only to the server you entered, to sign you in. For Kavita and Stump, Benday uses your password once to get an API key for your account and stores only the key. On Stump, Benday creates that key on your account for this device, named "Benday (…)", and deletes the earlier keys it created for this device; you can see and revoke it in Stump's settings. If you enter a separate KOReader sync login for a catalog, it is stored the same way and sent only to that server's KOReader sync.

Your library and reading. Covers, pages and books are loaded from your server. Your reading progress is saved on your device and to your account on the server, where the server takes it (Komga, Kavita, Stump and some OPDS servers, directly or through the server's KOReader sync). On Komga, bookmarks, ratings, your Want to read list and per-series reader settings are also synced through your own Komga account, so they appear on your other devices; on other servers they stay on your device. Downloaded books, image caches and reading statistics stay on your device.

Optional services you choose to connect:

  • MangaUpdates: if you sign in to MangaUpdates in Settings, Benday stores the session token on your device and sends your reading progress to MangaUpdates for the series you link. MangaUpdates' own privacy policy applies to that data.
  • Komf: if you enter the address of your own Komf server (a metadata tool for Komga), Benday sends it the series you ask it to identify.

Sync through your own WebDAV folder (optional). Off unless you set it up in Settings › Sync between devices. Then Benday sends the data it syncs — bookmarks of your Kavita, Stump and OPDS servers, and the name you give each device — to the WebDAV address you entered (for example your own Nextcloud or NAS), and nowhere else; no Benday server or third party is involved. Each server's bookmarks are filed under a short code made from its address and your username; passwords and API keys are never sent there. The WebDAV password is kept in Android's encrypted storage on your device and sent only to that address. Stopping sync forgets the address and password on the device; the files stay in your folder for you to delete.

Server certificates. If your server uses a self-signed certificate and you choose to trust it, Benday stores its fingerprint on your device so it can recognise the same server later.

Backups

Settings › Backup & restore creates a file with your settings, server addresses, usernames, reading statistics and history. It does not include passwords. The file is saved where you choose; we never receive it.

Permissions

  • Internet: to reach your server and any services you connect.
  • Notifications: to show download progress and, if you turn them on, new books in series you follow or read.
  • Background work: if you turn on new-book notifications, Android runs a periodic check (every few hours) that asks your saved servers for their newest books. It talks only to those servers, with the sign-in saved on your device, and what it learns stays on your device.
  • Foreground service (data sync): to keep downloads running while the app is in the background.
  • Biometrics: only if you turn on the app lock.
  • Read storage (Android 12 and older): to open comic files you pick from your device.
  • Write storage (Android 9 and older): only to save a page to your Pictures folder when you ask for it.

Beta testing

Joining the beta means joining a Google Group with your Google account, so that Google Play lets you install the test version. The group is run by Google under Google's terms; the developer sees the members' email addresses and uses them only to run the test. Leave the group to stop testing and be removed.

Children

Benday is not directed at children. It shows whatever content is on the servers you connect it to.

Deleting your data

Everything Benday stores is on your device or on your own servers. Clearing the app's storage or uninstalling it deletes the data on your device. Data on your server is managed by that server; data sent to MangaUpdates is managed by MangaUpdates.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new date.
